The Department of Licensing (DOL) is marking all standard driver licenses and ID cards with the language, “federal limits apply,” to help bring Washington into compliance with the federal REAL ID Act. DOL expects Washington to be in full compliance by fall 2018.
By October 1, 2020, standard driver licenses and ID cards will no longer be an acceptable form of identification for boarding domestic flights and entering some secure federal facilities, like military bases and nuclear power plants. There are a variety of identity documents that can be used to board an airplane or enter secure federal facilities, including:
- U.S. or foreign Passport
- U.S. Passport Card
- Military ID
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- Enhanced driver license
- One of several other types of federally approved forms of identification (tsa.gov).
“There is plenty of time to educate yourself on all options and choose the identification that works best for you,” said Pat Kohler, DOL Director. “Our ID2020 campaign was created to help educate Washington residents about the REAL ID Act requirements and their options for REAL ID compliant documents if they plan to travel within the United States.”
The main goal of the ID2020 campaign is to help Washington residents decide which identity document best fits their lifestyle. Even though REAL ID goes into effect on October 1, 2020, it only affects people who want to travel by plane or access certain federal facilities. A standard driver license or ID card will work for other U.S. travel like driving in Washington, across state lines, or riding a train.
Washington’s enhanced driver licenses (EDLs) and enhanced ID (EIDs) cards are REAL ID compliant, and valid for air travel within the United States and can be used to cross the borders of Canada and Mexico by land or sea. Some commonly needed documents to get an EDL/EID are certified birth certificate, U.S. passport or military ID. A full list of document options to obtain an enhanced driver license or ID card is available on the DOL website.

Firearms-related fatalities increase 24 percent over same period last year
|Today the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund issued a new 2018 Mid-Year Law Enforcement Officer Fatalities Report with preliminary data through June 30, 2018, revealing that 73 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in 2018—a seven percent increase over the same period last year (65).
Of these 73 officers, 31 were killed in firearms-related incidents, 27 were killed in traffic-related incidents, and 15 died due to other causes such as job-related illnesses.
“Law enforcement officers put their badges on each day and work to keep citizens and communities safe” said Memorial Fund CEO Craig W. Floyd. “With 73 officers having made the ultimate sacrifice already this year, this report serves as an important reminder of the debt of gratitude that we owe the 900,000 men and women who serve in law enforcement each day. It’s important for our citizenry to protect America’s peace officers with the same dedication and commitment they show each day in protecting us.”

Seattle’s Community Police Commission is asking the City Council to delay confirmation hearings for a new police chief until it can examine the selection process more closely.
The civilian advisory commission sent a letter to Council President Bruce Harrell Thursday expressing concerns about finalists selected by Mayor Jenny Durkan.
The commission says it asked the mayor’s office for multiple records on the search process three weeks ago, but has not received them. Of chief concern to commission members is that acting Police Chief Carmen Best wasn’t a finalist. Best was the only woman and the only local candidate.
Neither the council nor the mayor’s office have commented on the letter. The Mayor’s office sent a response to the CPC Friday.
Isaac Ruiz, co-chair of the commission, said they had been assured orally from the mayor’s office that the documents are coming soon. “What we’re hoping to accomplish is to have the CPC get that information and issue findings or recommendations or whatever comes out of this process — at a time when it could actually still make a difference in the process,” Ruiz said.
Ruiz said the commission is just trying to do its job and there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Even though he’s been closely following the search, Ruiz said he still doesn’t have a clear understanding of how the finalists were selected. “On the other hand, I think we have to wait to see what the documents show. And if those documents lead to other questions, we’ll ask those follow-up questions. It’s what we owe the community,” Ruiz said.
The commission has retained an equal employment opportunity expert to review the search process for legal problems. It plans to report back to council when the review is complete.
