NY Jets coach Todd Bowles on facing the Seahawks

September 29, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

The good news for the New York Jest (1-2) is that they cannot play any worse than they did in last Sundays error filed 24 to 3 loss at Kansas City. How bad was it you ask?  How about eight turnovers, two of which where returned for touchdowns and three that were intercepted in the endzone.

Fair to say eight was more than enough for  New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles. The eight turnovers were the most by the Jets  since they set a franchise record with 10 in a loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 21, 1976.

The Jets will need a short memory if they are to overcome their error prone ways and beat the visiting Seattle Seahawks (2-1)  Sunday  (10:00 a.m PT) at MetLife Stadium. The Seahawks have won the last three  games between the teams, two were in Seattle  ( 2008,2011) and the  third was in New York(  2004). The Jets recently signed former University of Washington TE Seferian-Jenkins who  was released by the  Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week .

CONFERENCE CALL
September 28, 2016

(On how much blame is on QB Ryan Fitzpatrick for the turnovers last week)  “Six interceptions is six interceptions. That’s a bad day at the office. We’ve got to take care of the football. Our biggest thing is that we threw three in the red zone. That part, we’ve got to make better decisions on. We know that as a team, as a quarterback and as a coach and staff. We’ve got to take better care of the football down there. A bad day is a bad day so everybody gets the blame.”

(On how long it will take Austin Seferian-Jenkins to learn the offense and get integrated into the offense)  “I’ve got to meet him first and gauge his intelligence. I’ve seen some people get it in a few days and I’ve seen some people take a few weeks. Without meeting him yet it would be hard to answer that question.”

(On what’s the reason behind the defense going from causing seven sacks in week one to only three sacks combined in the following games since then)  “Well it’s not necessarily a lack of pass rush. It doesn’t mean that you get sacks because you don’t have a lack of pass rush. We rushed the passer pretty good, they disrupted some things. The biggest thing is disrupting the time and throwing people off their routes and making the quarterback uncomfortable. If you can do that then you don’t worry about the sacks either. So we’ll just continue to keep working on that and getting better and the sacks will come.”

(On his thoughts on RB Troymaine Pope formerly with the Seahawks during preseason)  “Not yet. We know he can run the football, we know he’s a good athlete and we got him in. We’ve just got to find time to get him up to speed where he can get some reps and play ball.”

Seattle Sounders defeat Chicago Fire 1-0 vault into playoff spot

September 28, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

The Seattle Sounders (12-13-5, 41 points) did that they had to do in their 1-0 victory over Eastern Conference cellar dwellers Chicago Fire (6-15-9, 27 points)Wednesday Night at Century Link Field in front of 39,269 spirited fans.  Centerback Chard Marshall’s goal in the 25th minute gave the Sounders the win that elevated the team above the redline for the first time this season. The Sounders are tied with the Portland Timber for the sixth and final spot in the Western  Conference but have a game in hand and a better goal differential margin. Portland is at minus two, while the Sounders are at  zero.

Weather it was an emotional let down from Sundays win  in LA or the quality of the opponent the Sounders were facing one thing was evident, the home side was not ready for battle when the game started. The Sounders were lethargic and heavy footed to start  the game and the visiting Fire looked more dangerous and mostly likely to score fist. Chicago forward David lethargic had a decent chance that could have brought heartache and misery to the Rave Green faithful but right his footed shot in the 11th minute was  high and wide.

Sensing danger the Sounders pushed forward and their diligence paid off in the 25th minute  when Chad Marshall headed home an Adreas Ivanschitz header to give the home side the 1-0 lead they never relinquished.

” Obviously Sunday was an emotional  game, a huge win for us , I do’t think tonight was our best soccer,” Marshall said after the game. ” We were able to grind it out and get a result  and a huge three points late in the season.

The Sounders had several chances in the second half but  were unable to capitalize and needed a diving save by Stefan Frei in the 90th minute to preserve the win. The Sounders record under interim  head coach Brian Schemtzer stands at six wins, one loss and one tie.

Sounders Dempsey ruled out for remainder of season

September 28, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Sounder forward Clint Dempsey

The Seattle Sounders march towards the MLS Playoffs will have to be done without forward Clint Dempsey.  Sounders  General Manager Garth Lagerwey  announced on Tuesday afternoon that the  star forward  and former USMNT captain will not participate in any  further soccer activities as he continues to undergo tests and treatment for an irregular  heart, an ailment that was discovered  last August.

Dempsey was cleared for light exercise on Sept 14 after undergoing treatment for the ailment  and the team was cautiously optimistic the  star forward would return to action before the season ended. On Tuesday all bets were off and Dempsey’s season was official.

”  Clint Dempsey has been ruled out of the rest of the season and we are not comfortable putting out an kind of pressure on this, his return to play in not important relative to his health both short term and long term and we feel that by ruling him today its puts us in the best position to eventually get him back for the  2017 season,” Lagerwey said during the teams press conference at Starfire Sports Complex  which is the teams  practice facility.

Dempsey is the USMNT’s second all-time leading goalscorer and joined the Sounders as a Designated Player in August 2013. He has 34 career goals for Seattle in 72 matches over three-plus seasons, including eight tallies this year.

Monday morning with Pete Carroll

September 27, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Russell Wilson looks downfield.
Russell Wilson looks downfield.

The Seattle Seahawks regained some of their swagger with Sundays 37 to 18 dismantling of the  San Francisco 49ers in front of 69,010 fans at CenturyLink Field. The Seahawks returned to their old ways of playing stifling defense, using the run game to soften up the opponents defense and finish off the tired defense with play action passes.

TEMPERED WIN

Like any game, there where a few surprises to the Seahawks win. Quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a knee injury in the third quarter after a Horse Collar tackle by 49er linebacker Eli Harold. While the defender was penalized for the illegal hit, it was of little consequence to the Seahawks who watched their franchise quarterback wincing in pain as he raised himself up from the turf. Wilson has since been diagnosed with a right MCL knee sprain but is expected to play in Sundays game at New York when the Seahawks take on the Jets.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll met with the media Monday during his weekly presser.

HEAD COACH PETE CARROLL

On what he learned today about Russell Wilson’s knee injury) “That he’s remarkably well off for having a play like that. He looks very good, very upbeat and positive about feeling like he’s going to be fine. It was just all positive.”

(On whether he expects Russell Wilson to play on Sunday) “Yes. It’s really early to say because he hasn’t done anything other than just convince me of that thought, he’s done a very good job so far.”

(On whether Russell Wilson will be limited in practice) “We’ll see. We’re planning on practicing him on Wednesday.”

WHAT HE LEARNED FROM THE FILM

On what he saw from tape) “It looked like we took a step forward in a couple of areas that we were hoping to. We wanted to run the ball a little better. It felt like early on we were making some better progress up front, and it turned into a really good day on third down which really leads to the opportunities that allow us to get to some of the bigger pass plays and some of the more explosive plays that we’ve been hoping to get. I think we wound up with nine explosive plays which is the best of the first three games, that’s kind of the range of when we’re hitting it, it’s right around there. Really fired up about the defense. The first three weeks of the season we’ve really played the same. Very aggressive, tough football and good at the line of scrimmage. Also really effective on third down and we’re running really well to the ball and stuff. Some real good positive things there for three weeks in.”

DEFENSIVE LAPSE

After liming the 49ers to a Field Goal for the first three quarters, the defense surrendered two late fourth quarter touchdowns.

(On if there was some frustration amongst the defense with two late touchdown drives at the end of the game)   “Yeah there was, I think for all the obvious reasons. Our guys have a lot of pride and really we were a little out of sync. We were trying to get after the quarterback and rush the passer thinking that they were going to try to get their way back in it by throwing it. As we kind of admitted to the players, as coaches we felt the same thing. We were trying to get some pressure on the quarterback and they kept running the football. They in essence decided that’s how to finish the game. We didn’t believe it so we kept rushing the passer and they kept running it. They got half of their yards in the late last eight or nine minutes in the game. Good for them, they did a nice job. But it was frustrating because our guys don’t want to see that. They’ve worked really hard for three and a half quarters to not let that happen and we gave them some yards.”

GAME NOTES

Running back Christine Michael rushed for 106 yards, while Doug Baldwin had eight  receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown and Tight End Jimmy Graham joined the offensive explosion with six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. Bobby  Wagner had an interception to give the Seahawks their first turnover of the season.

Monday morning rewind with Husky coach Chris Petersen

September 27, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Chris Petersen on StanfordThe eyes of college football will be on Husky Stadium Friday night as the 9th ranked University of Washington Huskies ( 4-0, 1-0) take on the 6th ranked Stanford (3-0, 2-0) Cardinal (6 p.m. PT ) in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Washington is coming off a 35 to 28 OT win over the Arizona Wildcats  in Arizona.

Stanford is coming off an impressive 22-13 win over the UCLA Bruins in Pasadena. The  game was a nail bitter until Stanford scored two touchdowns in the last 24 seconds to secure it’s  ninth- consecutive victory over the Bruins.

The Huskies’ current seven-game winning streak is tied with Stanford for longest in the Pac-12 and fourth-longest in the nation. Fridays game will be the first time two top-10 teams meet in Husky Stadium since 1997.

COACHES VIEW

HUSKIES vs. CARDINAL HISTORY:

Over 86 all-time meetings, the UW and Stanford are square at 41-41-4. After winning eight straight vs. Stanford from 1959 to 1966, the Huskies lost 10 in a row from 1967 to 1976. Since that 1976 loss, Washington has gone 22-11 against the Cardinal. One of those 11 losses was a big upset in 1982 when the No. 2 Huskies fell to the Cardinal, 43-31, in Palo Alto. The second UW loss during that stretch came at Stanford in 1994, when the Cardinal upset 12th-ranked Washington, 46-28.

Takeaways from Sounders massive 4-2 win over Galaxy

September 26, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Jordan Morris battle for the ball.
( SoundersFC)

Seattle Sounder FC (11-13-15, 38 points ) interim coach Brian Schmetzer and his team got the signature win they wanted and so desperately needed  Sunday when the Sounders beat the LA Galaxy ((11-5-15, 48 points) 4-2 at the Stub Hub Center for the first time since 2009.  It was an improbable win for the Sounders not only because of who they played but how they played  in accomplishing the rare feat.

LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane gave the home side the lead in the 20th minute with a sublime header after receiving a perfect pass from winger Sebastian Lletget.  LA was dominating the run of play and an almost certain second goal looked imminent due to the home sides ball possession dominance.

What occurred instead  was an LA  own goal in the 35th minute.  Andreas Ivanschitz’s  perfect placed out-swinger  corner kick was too much for Galaxy defender Jelle Van Damme who headed the ball into his own goal. The goal gave Seattle some life and the two sides went into the break tied at 1-1.

Rookie sensation Jordan Morris lead the Sounders with two goals in the second half and mid field lynch pin Osvaldo Alonso hit a wonder goal from 23 yards out to put the visitors high and drive.  LA was awarded a penalty in the 85th which captain Robbie Keane converted but it  was too little to late.

You’ve got a tough choice: Will it be @JmoSmooth13 or @OzzieAlonso for @MLS Goal of the Week? https://t.co/02RVAZPVfL #LAvSEA pic.twitter.com/oTKSrTdGkQ

— Seattle Sounders FC (@SoundersFC) September 26, 2016

TAKEAWAYS

NO QUIT SOUNDERS

Leading up to the game Sounder coach Brian Schmetzer  vowed that no matter what happens in the game, his team would not quit. There has been no quit in the Sounders since the second half of their  game against Portland on August 28th in the Rose City. Portland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fast half and the Sounders won the second half but not the game by scoring two goals. The game ended 4-2 and Schmetzer vowed after the game that his team will always play hard till the final whistle.

JORDAN MORRIS IS THE REAL DEAL

Never mind rookie of the year, Jordan Morris should be up for league MVP if the Sounders get into the playoffs. Morris’s two goals against the Galaxy was his first professional brace bringing his team lead total to 12. Morris is second in MLS history for most goals scored by a rookie.  Orlando City SC’s  professional professional hold the league’s all-time record with 17. In a season that has seen the Sounders change coaches, formations and personnel, Morris has put in the time to became a two foot striker and continue’s to improve his reading of the game which has made him a dangerous player wether or not he has the ball.

With the improbable win, the Sounders  find themselves just three point behind the Portland Timbers who occupy the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western  Conference. Seattle faces Eastern Conference cellar dwellers Chicago Fire  Wednesday night (7:30 p.m. PT ) at CenturyLink Field.

Seahawks beat 49ers 37-18 get Wilson injury scare

September 25, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Michael celebrates touchdown run
Michael celebrates touchdown run

The Seattle Seahawks offense played a flawless first half, the defense got it’s first turnover of the season and the team overcame an injury scare to Russell Wilson on its way to a dominating 37 to 18 win over the  San Francisco 49ers in front of 69,010 elated Seahawks.

It took Seattle just 43 second to break out of it’s scoring slump as Christine Michael darted  41 yards for the Seahawks first running touchdown of the season and just their second overall.

The  Seahawks offense held a coming our party of sorts  and gave the 12’s reason to believe their long lost offense had found its rhythm when Michael added another rushing TD  from from two yards out on the Seahawks next position.

The Seahawks defense surrendered a 22 yard FG and the offense finished the half with a 10-0 run courtesy of a  Wilson to Jimmy Graham 18 yard TD pass play and a 33 yard FG by Steve touchdown’s that gave the home side a 24-3 lead at halftime.

The Seahawks injury scare came on their second  offensive possession of the second half when 49er linebacker Eli Harold was penalized for a hoarse collar tackle on Wilson.

“He’s in good spirits, just like you would think,” head coach Pete Carroll said after the game. “He has no intention of thinking anything other than that he is playing.
“He was in a bad situation, he knows it, too. He lucked out, that it wasn’t worse. He’ll do an incredible job of rehabbing … and probably the biggest issue is that he’s still rehabbing his ankle, too.
“We’re going to take care of him and work him through the week.”

Boykin engineered two scoring drives in his mop up duty. Bobby Wagner’s interception of a Blaine Gabbert pass led to a 22 yard field goal by Steven Huaschka field goal and Boykin hit Doug Baldwin on a 16 yard pass play on Seattle’s next offensive possession to close out Seattle’s scoring for the day. Baldwin finished the day with eight receptions for 106 yards. Michael finished with the day with 106 rushing yards, his best effort for Seattle since his 192 yards  in 2015.

San Francisco running back Carlos Hyde scored two rushing touchdwon’s both from eight yards for the 49ers to close out the game.

Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy preview

September 25, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Ozzie Alonso dribbles ball forward
Ozzie Alonso dribbles ball forward

Seattle SoundersFC ( 10-13-5, 35 points) will need to take down the proverbial bully Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m. PT)  at the StubHub Center in Southern California if  they are to keep their playoff hopes alive. The said give me your lunch money or else bully is none other than the LA Galaxy (11-4-15, 48 points.)

The Sounders are in seventh place and just six points behind the Portland Timbers ( 11-8-12, 41 points) who  occupy the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sounders have played three less games so a tie in LA will keep  hope alive. A loss would not eliminate them from the playoffs race but destiny would be out of the Rave Greens hands.

The Galaxy are on a six game unbeaten streak and are currently tied for second place with Colorado. A win over Seattle would clinch a playoff berth. The Sounders will need to play their best if they are to walk away with a tie. Seattle has not won in LA  since 2009.

If the Sounders are to break the trend they  will need to execute in every phase of the game according to interim head coach Brian Schmetzer.

“The home tactics versus away tactics are subtle, but sometimes those subtle differences can creep up in moments in the game where one team executes their game plan, versus the other team executing theirs and it becomes an issue,” Schmetzer said. “Case in point: We’ve talked about or outside backs going [forward], but [Robbie] Keane, [Giovani] dos Santos, [Steven] Gerrard when he was in, those guys like to play in those soft areas, wait until the ball is turned over and then they’re out on the counter.

“So the challenge will be for Joevin [Jones] and Tyrone [Mears], Cristian [Roldan], Ozzie [Alonso], the two center backs to be aware, but at the same time we’re not going to be afraid to try and pin them in their half of the field either.”

Game Notes

The Sounders will be without Clint Dempsey who is  still going medical testing for an irregular heartbeat. Captain Brad Evans was a full participant during the teams practice on Friday and is available for selection.

Familiar foe Landon Donovan came out of retirement on September 11 2016 and scored a goal in his second game helping the Galaxy secure a 2-2 draw at Sporting Kansas City.

In addition to Donovan, LA is expected to see the return of  Forwards Gio Dos Santos and Robbie Keane who were dealing with leg injuries.

The teams are meeting for the third time this season. Robbie Keane scored the game’s lone goal to give the Galaxy the victory July 9 at CenturyLink Field. On July 31 at CenturyLink Field, Cristian Roldan gave Sounders FC a first-half lead, but Sebastian Lletget netted the equalizer 12 minutes from time to leave the teams in a 1-1 draw.
