Beating the Heat at Seatac’s Pet Expo

Beating the Heat at Seatace Pet Expo by Madison McQueen.

One step inside the Washington State Fair Events Center in Puyallup this past weekend and you’re suddenly hit with the need to pet and take pictures of every cute animal in your vicinity, which happens to be all of them.

Glancing outside the glass door you just entered, you can see a long pool with a platform for doggie divers leading up to it and bleachers off to the side filled with an excited crowd taking pictures. On your left is a demonstration area where dogs chase after balls while jumping over obstacles and hitting a worn backboard that might resemble one Usain Bolt may have used to start a race.

To the right extends the rest of the convention center, booths are in full swing and range from miscellaneous toys and blankets to open discussions about caring for animals with cancer.

One of those discussion booths was manned by the founder of WhyDoesMyDog.com, Aly Delacoeur. The website launched last year with the intention of answering hard-to-ask questions concerning dogs suffering from disease. After eight years of dog training Delacoeur said most trainers did not receive formal education for their craft.

Which is why the videos delving into these questions rely heavily on advice from medical experts from institutions such as University of Washington and UC Berkley, rather than sticking to the words of dog trainers. Not to mention, the videos are absolutely free.

“ {The site} was created out of this idea that pet owners need good information,” Delacoeur said, “and with so many millennials living in the internet right now – we want to provide good stuff for them.”

Speaking of free services to promote the health of your pet, veterinarian and CEO of “The Doggie Lift” Eric Lui offered free nail trims for pups that were typically too difficult for owners to handle on their own. The lift works as a traditional pulley system that hooks onto the top of a doorway and suspends your pet midair in a harness built for full body support.

Lui said the inspiration for the product came from having to sedate his own dog when trimming and seeing owners come in to his clinic with dogs that had nails so long, they curled into the paw. He said his product has worked wonders at home.

“Most people think it won’t work, they’re very skeptical,” Lui said, “we did a hundred dogs yesterday…today we’ve done about thirty.”

This past weekend marked the third year Lui has demonstrated his product at this expo, although he also remarks he’s also debuted in California, Vegas, and Atlanta, Georgia.

Along with pets and their owners, the expo also welcomed humans that had yet to find their best friends. Three booths featured dogs rescued from high-kill pounds while just as many other booths let people pickup and take pictures with parrots, domestic rats and non-venomous snakes. One such rescue booth, Collar of Hope, had overseen eight adoptions out of the estimated twelve brought in just the two days the expo had opened. This was their first year attending the expo and they plan to be back next year.

Seattle Sounders FC earn 2-2 playing with 10 men vs Portland Timbers

June 25, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Seattle Sounders FC( 5-7-6, 21pts) had their dream start against the Portland Timbers when they scored the game’s first goal. Unfortunately for the visitors, twenty-seven minutes of good quality soccer was wiped out by seven minutes of just plain bad soccer. The seven minutes of bad soccer was followed by a gritty, determined,  45-minute  effort that earned the visitors a 2-2  while playing a man down against the Portland Timbers.(7-7-4, 25pts)

The Seattle Sounders scored when Joevin Jones made good on his second attempt at goal to give the Sounders a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Jones first attempt at goal was saved by Timbers goalkeeper  Jake Gleason and the rebound fell to Jones who promptly slammed the ball into the back of the net.

The Sounders were in cruise control, winning the possession battle with crisp, penetrating passes until the 36th minute when Portland forward Dairon Asprilla hit the crossbar which was the home side’s first real clean cut shot at goal. The Sounders defense kept the Timber offense in check until the 43rd minute when  Sounder defender Brad Evans was issued a red card for bringing down Timber forward Darlington Nagbe inside the Sounder box.

In addition to the red card,  the Timbers were awarded a penalty kick which Fernando Adi blasted past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to tie the game at 1-1 after 43 minutes of play. The  game looked liked it would unravel for the  ten men Sounders when Asprilla  headed in a corner kick to give the Timbers a 2-1 lead  at the break

Rather than lick their wounds and go home, the Sounders continued to battle all the way into second half stoppage time when the determined effort paid off when Clint Dempsey scored in the 94th minute to tie the game at 2-2 . Dempsey started the game on the bench due to Nationa Team duty scored his ninth goal in nine games against the Timbers.

The tie against the Timbers restores some confidence to a Sounder team that gave up a stoppage time goal to Orlando City  Wednesday night and saw a win turn into a tie.

Race and Culture in Art, a community conversation.

Damien Davis and Davita Ingram discuss race and and culture in art ( Madison McQueen)

Art in “Conversation” by Madison McQueen

Just inside the Northwest African American Museum, where the outside Jimi Hendrix Park grand opening concert was filling the air with psychedelic rock, an important conversation was wrapping up.  Before the festivities on its front lawn began in earnest, NAAM hosted a talk lead by guest speakers Damien Davis and Davida Ingram on the representation of race and culture in art.

Ingram prefaced the conversation with the hope that the purpose of the talk was not to create a feeling that any one individual was wrong, but to inspire a sense of unity and help the audience realize the conversation’s “feeling space.”

“How can we as good gardeners of humanity think about what’s been weeding at our garden, what’s not been left to grow to full fruition, and how we can grow a better garden together,” Ingram said.

Mary Coss moderated the talk and posed a question of her own when a white audience member described her inherent feeling of discomfort and vulnerability when discussing racial topics.

“Where did this [discomfort] come from, how did it start?” Coss asked.

“There has to be a willingness to…live with the discomfort in order to work through it or work under it, around it,” Davis said.

Davis drew attention to the idea of other cultures, specifically the Italian people, who use black bodies as a central visual and then mold their art and fashion to compliment that center.

With this idea, Davis decided to emulate what complimenting black culture is like in America with his exhibit at the Method Gallery, White Room. The decorative tiles that originally made up the floor of the gallery space is now covered with white plexiglass figures affixed with industrial bolts and screws to more plexiglass.

Davis was frustrated when he learned the tiles were meant as decoration in a gallery space that is meant to be neutral. He ultimately decided covering the floor was the best course of action. As a result, this exhibit is meant to force the viewers to consider the whiteness of the material which covers the meaningful tiles of the floor underneath as they traverse the room, walking on the exhibit.

“[Covering the floor is] a conceptual gesture that is really about understanding and unpacking the history of this country, which is about…if the thing that’s there is uncomfortable, or it’s inconvenient, you just sort of wipe it away,” Davis said.

Davis’ White Room is on display at the Method Gallery on Pioneer Square until August 6.

Washington Husky Guard Markelle Fultz top pick in 2017 NBA Draft

June 24, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

UW guard Markelle Fultz ( Tatenda Productions)
UW guard Markelle Fultz ( Tatenda Productions)

University of Washington standout freshman Markelle Fultz made history on Thursday night as he was drafted as the number one overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Fultz is the first Husky to be drafted number one and the first player in the Pac-12 to go first since Bill Walton (UCLA) did in 1974. Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) is the only other Conference of Champions member to earn a no. 1 pick as he was selected in 1969.

Additionally, with Fultz‘ number one pick, Washington becomes the first school in the history of the NBA and WNBA Drafts to have the top pick in both, as Kelsey Plum went first in April to the San Antonio Stars.

Upon hearing his name called, Fultz said, “It was unbelievable really. Truly a blessing, something I’ve been dreaming about. Last night I was just sitting down thinking about hearing my name called and it was unreal really, once I heard my name called, it was like God calling me so I’m just happy.”

Fultz is the Huskies’ 10th first round pick since 2005 and is the 16th since the draft switched to just two rounds in 1989. He is the sixth first round pick since 2002 for the Dawgs and the third over the last two Drafts as Marquese Chriss (Phoenix Suns, pick No. 8) and Dejounte Murray (San Antonio Spurs, pick No. 29) were both first round selections a year ago.

“The 76ers are getting a guy that has an NBA frame already,” said ESPN’s Jay Bilas. “He’s got great length and he’s a three-level scorer. He can score from deep, he can score from middle range and he can score at the rim. He’s got great body balance and by far in this draft, he’s the best pick and roll ball handler in the draft.

He’s essentially a James Harden clone on the offensive end. He’s got a quick high release on his shot. He had some Lebron type blocks where he chases guys down from behind but to have a guy like this where offensively he’s really got no holes in his game, he’s a multi-dimensional scorer that once he comes off the pick and roll he can change speed, change direction and an excellent finisher around the basket. He’s long, he’s strong and the kid knows how to play. He’s also an excellent passer, averaging almost six assists per game.”

Fultz, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., had a stellar freshman season at Washington earning third team All-American honors from both the AP and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), becoming the first Husky to be named an All-American since Isaiah Thomas in 2011. He was also a Sporting News Freshman All-American, a Pac-12 First Team All-Conference and All-Freshman selection and a USBWA All District XI honoree.

The guard was the nation’s leading freshman scorer averaging 23.2 points in 25 games, which also ranked sixth overall in the NCAA. Fultz also led the Pac-12 in scoring by almost five points, giving UW the league’s scoring crown for the second-straight year.

He set the UW freshman scoring record with 579 points and was second on the freshman list in assists (148), tied for fifth in blocks (30) and was fifth in steals (40). He recorded five 30-point scoring efforts which rank tied for fifth all-time at UW and were the most in a single season. Additionally, his 18 20-point games during the 2016-17 campaign rank tied for third all-time at UW.

In the last 15 drafts, at least one Husky has been selected in all but three years (2008, 2013, 2015). Additionally, the Dawgs have had 55 overall picks in the NBA Draft.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Peace & Red Velvet

In Celebration of Jimi Hendrix By Madison McQueen

Almost three years after the initial planning for the Jimi Hendrix Park began; the long-awaited grand opening saw a mass of about 200 people sporting concert memorabilia and the need to rock. The audience swayed, bobbed their heads, and stamped their feet in unison to the music from bands such as the Bellevue School of Rock, Peace & Red Velvet, Henry Cooper, and Grace Love.

While art swirled through the air, a more tangible form of art was evolving on the concrete sidewalk that wound its way around the park. Men, women, and children of all ages, professional and amateur, were creating their own chalk art inspired by Jimi Hendrix and the unity he dreamed of expressed in colorful rainbows and reverent caricatures of him.

And when the music wasn’t blasting and the chalk artists had finally reemerged covered in fluorescent dust from behind the towering sculpture reminiscent of Hendrix’s song “Little Wing,” guest speakers from Youth Speaks Seattle enticed us into conversation about creating more black inspirations in the media and the love lost between this oppressive country and its people.

The concert and poetry slam was viewed from a modest stage on the front lawn of the Northwest African American Museum while photographers swarmed the area, some plopping themselves down crisscross inches away from the front of the stage and others documenting the now finished illustrations.

This unapologetic celebration of Hendrix’s memory stayed true to his band’s name all these years later. It was truly an experience.

Seattle Sounders FC give up stoppage time goal in home draw with Orlando City FC

Sounders Jordan Morris makes a move against Orlando City Fc
Sounders Jordan Morris makes a move against Orlando City FC

The Seattle Sounders FC inability to put a game away came back to haunt them in their 1-1 tie with Orlando City SC Wednesday night at Century Link Field.

After taking a 1-0 lead in in the 19th minute on a Wil Bruin goal, the Sounders dominated the rest of the half and all of the second half up until the fourth minute of stoppage time. Scott Sutter scored his first MLS goal to give the visiting  Orlando City FC ( 8-3-5) the hard fought draw.

Not a bad time to score your first in purple! #VamosOrlando pic.twitter.com/1wMDcIwtDP

— Orlando City SC (@OrlandoCitySC) June 22, 2017

The story is coming all too familiar for the (5-7-5) Sounders. The inability to put teams away is putting the teams’ aspirations of winning back to back MLS  more wishful thinking than reality. The Sounders are eighth place in the Western Conference with the top six teams earning a playoff berth.

Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik smothers the ball

The perplexing issue for Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer is that his team his team’s efforts are being plagued momentary laps of execution on offense and defense.

The Sounders are 4-1-3 at home and just 1-6-2 on a road. The Sounders will need to regroup with a quickness as they will travel to Portland to face the third place Portland Timbers (7-7-3) in Cascadia clash.

After the ceremony, graduates will have the opportunity to network and dialogue with a host of distinguished, successful elders, as well as other community leaders.
Phillip Jackson, Executive Director of The Black Star Project, says, “Once, our keynote speaker, Hip Hop Artist Lupe Fiasco, gave each of the graduates $100 to honor their accomplishments. Young men will wear the representative cap and gown from their home elementary, high school or college. The recent graduates will focus on creating life plans, building their communities and becoming good role models for younger Black boys. One thousand family members, friends and supporters of education are expected to attend this historic occasion.
