VOTE “Yes” on Initiative 735 Help our children get the democracy they deserve.

October 31, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

DA_Tacoma2Wealthy special interests are buying up endless amounts of advertisements, drowning out anyone who can’t afford to spend millions of dollars. We now have a government run by the wealthy that does not affect the diversity of our nation.

At the county, state, and federal level, whites make up 90 percent of our elected leaders, even though 37 percent of Americans are people of color. This inequality happens partly because people with extreme wealth tend to be white, and they can support candidates who look, think and act like they do. Often, this means they are not prioritizing the needs of people of color. Then, when people of color do run for office, it’s also harder for them to raise the money they need to win.

kaylee
“I believe that everyone should have a voice, regardless of how much money they have, so I support Initiative 735.” Kaylee Mathews, 22, massage therapist, Tacoma

Wealthy special interests are corrupting our electoral system and supporting candidates that will support them in return. About 91% of the time, the candidate with the most money wins. Where does that leave the interests of the rest of us? We need to get big money out of elections!

To fix this, we have to overturn Citizens United v FEC and other Supreme Court rulings that have allowed unregulated, anonymous money to flood our elections. Initiative 735 will make Washington the 18th state to go on record telling Congress to overturn Citizens United and to make sure that all donations in elections are regulated and publicly disclosed. 735 says corporations are not people; money is not speech; and there should be limits on political contributions.

Please vote “Yes” on Initiative 735 to help your children and grandchildren get the democracy they deserve. Details on the initiative can be found at wamend.org.

Patience pays off for Seattle Sounders FC in 3-0 win over FC Dallas

FC Dallas’s strategy going  into leg one of the two-legged  Western Conference Semifinals playoff against the Seattle Sounders FC was pretty straight forward. Let the home side have the majority of the ball possession, minimize shots on goals and counter against the home side when the opportunity presented its self. With the second game at home, and away goals carrying more weight that home goals, all Dallas needed was to draw or win to leave with the upper hand then  win the series at home.

DALLAS STRATEGY
FC Dallas Coach Óscar Pareja bend but don’t break strategy worked for the first 45 minutes as the Sounders had three shots on goal to Dalla’s one ,dominated the time of possession 63 % to 37% but went into the halftime  break with a scoreless first half to show for their efforts.
“ In the first half I thought that we had control of the game honestly I did not see much happening, they had two chances on the left side, the two crosses but we also had some moments where we could have balanced the game.

“And we had some few plays where our game plan worked with Michael Barrios and Maximiliano Urruti trying to get behind the defenders. But it was pretty level in the first half  but as I said in the second half  Seattle outplayed  us in the  first twenty minutes and we have to accept that.

“Urruti trying to get behind the defenders. But it was pretty level in the first half  but as I said in the second half  Seattle outplayed  us in the  first twenty minutes and we have to accept that.

SECOND HALF DOMINANCE
Seattle three caution to wind to start the second half and the strategy paid off five minutes into  the second half as Joevin Jones streaked down the left side and crossed the  ball to an onrushing Nelson Valdez for the 1-0 lead. Nicolas Lodeiro made it 2-0 after receiving a pinpoint  pass from Jordan Morris two minutes later.

Lodiero scored his second goal of the game three minutes when his left-footed shot found the back of the FC Dallas goal to complete the rout at  3-0. Lodeiro’s goal was assisted by Joevin Jones who played his best game of the year for the Sounders with two assists.

“In the second half our team made the necessary adjustments, but they also made the necessary plays,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said after the game.

“We are talking about making plays so when you are talking about trying to win an MLS Cup you have to make plays and Valdez, Valdez Lodeiro, Morris, Jones they made plays and  you follow that up because we are always talking about the goals

“But you follow that up by  Zach Scott coming on and making plays, Chad Marshall another  huge game  and Steff, Tyrone and some of the guys who do not get enough credit they made plays at their end as well.”

Sounders goal keeper Stefan Frei earned his second straight postseason shutout and is now unbeaten in six home playoff games ( 5-0-1).

The series will resume next Sunday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco (6 p.m. PT; FS1/KIRO 97.3 FM).

Washington survives 31 to 24 showdown with Utah

October 29, 2016 by NWFacts 1 Comment

The No. 4 ranked University of Washington Huskies( 8-0, 5-0 Pac-12) survived the right hook knockout punch the No. 16 ranked Utah Utes (7-2, 4-2 Pac -12) threw at them Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Huskies 31 to 24 victory in enemy territory was just what the Dogs needed with the College Football Playoff Committee set to announce this season’s first College  rankings on Tuesday.

The question dogging Washington has been who have your played. For Washington, the answer was whatever team was on our schedule. Well, that’s all good and well but,  College Football is not just about how many wins you have, but who , and how you beat your opponent.  Washington’s  two road victories at Arizona ( 35 to 28) and Eugene ( 70 to 21) where perceived more about the Arizona and Oregon having down years rather than Washington being a National title contender. The 44 to 6 win over then No. 6 ranked Stanford raised National eyebrows but it was  a home win that left  something missing on the Dogs resume as far as the National pundits were concerned.

Washington bolted to a 14-0 lead  on a Myles  Gaskin 10 yard run and  a 16 yards  pass  play from Jake Browning to  John  Ross. Utah  then  countered with  a Joe Williams two-yard touchdown run and an Andy Philips  29 yard field goal to end the half at 14 to 10 and let Washington know they were in a legitimate football game.

Former UW QB recruit Troy Williams capped off a 13 play 75-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to Siaso Wilson to give the Utes the 17 to 14  lead after receiving the second half kickoff.  Washington countered with a six play 75-yard drive that was capped by a five-yard  touchdown pass from Jake Browning to John Ross that gave  the Huskies the 21 to 17 lead. CameronVan Winkle’s 41-yard field goal increased Washington’s  lead to 24 to 17.

Washington looked to be in control of the game  when the defense stopped the Utah offense on third-down and 11 but a roughing the passer call kept the drive alive and Utah tied the game at 24-all with 9:07 left to play, four plays later when Williams hit Evan Moeai on a 24-yard pass play.

PETTIS AND DEFENSE

While the  Washington offense stalled on its next offensive possession the Husky defense made its best stand of the season when it held Utah to a three and out possession. Utah punted and UW punt returner Dante Pettis put Washington back in the Playoff conversation with an electrifying  58-yard punt return that propelled Washington to its toughest win of the season.

Washington will be on the road for one more week as the Huskies travel to Berkely to face the California Bears on November 5th.

Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament brings closure and healing

Winners of the Inagura Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament
Winners of the Inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament

The Inaugural Cancer Classic Basketball Tournament was held last week at Garfield High School to bring together living survivors of  cancer and to honor those who passed away due to the disease.  The event was hardly a crying a fest, more like a celebration of hope and thankfulness for  blessings of  memories  that occurred through courageous struggles by victims and survivors of Breast Cancer

” I really wanted to provide a venue where the community could come together and celebrate  the struggles that are happening in our inner city and show that Breast  Cancer is a disease that touches all lives and not just Women, ”  said Event Coordinator Marvena Kemp.” Basketball has been a blessing to me and my family and I thought what better way to give back than have a Basketball Tournament during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to honor the struggles of the brave women who have and continue to fight  the Disease.”

The  Basketball Tournament portion of the event which was sponsored by Microsoft,The City of Seattle,  and Chick-Fil-A,  had over 20 teams that were made up of men and women. In addition to the basketball tournament, there was a banquet,  that included a moving and compassionate speech by Erin Jones Candidate for WA Superintendent of Public Instruction and of course countless hugs and a tear  here and there, for those that fought the good fight some of whom are still alive and some who have moved on

” It is truly a blessing to have so many of our community members here to celebrate life in a positive manner, said Tara Davis Assistant Director for Athletics for the Seattle School District who not only is a Hall of Fame Basketball player but also a Breast Cancer Survivor.

” And to have my mom here who is also a Breast Cancer Survivor just goes to show how connected we are as a community and how much we can accomplish when under the flag of healing and  compassion.”

While Kemp is a community champion for hope and healing , anyone that is familiar with her knows of her tireless efforts to bring brighter future for inner city kids,  Breast Cancer is near and dear to her heart because it has affected the lives of her friends and family.

” To have so many participants and volunteers turn out for this great event just goes to show that there is a lot of love and respect for each other and it’s not just about violence in the inner city”

Washington Huskies vs Utah Utes Preview

October 29, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Fortunately, the eyes of college football will in Salt Lake City Saturday when the #4 ranked University of Washington Huskies ( 7-0, 4-0 Pac 12) battle the # 17/16 ranked Utah Utes (7-1,4-1 Pac 12). A well-deserved moment in the sun for the two teams who will be looking to stay in the conversation regarding the College Football Playoffs. The ESPN ” College GameDay ” descended on the Utes campus Thursday to begin the hype. What’s unfortunate about the game is that this has a winner take all when really it should be one of two games that will determine Pac 12 supremacy and a spot in the Playoffs.

Because everyone is looking at this being a down year for the Pac 12, whoever loses Saturday’s game will have a very slim chance of getting back in the College Playoff discussion. If Washington loses on Saturday and wins out including the Pac 12 title game, there is very little chance they will be considered for a spot in the four-team playoff. If you Utah loses Saturday and wins out including the Pac-12 title game, it is highly unlikely the would be considered a playoff team with two losses. While the winner of Saturday’s game will be in the catbird seat for a Pac-12 title, the real loser on Saturday will be the Pac-12.

Sounders FC advance to Conference Semifinals with 1-0 win over Sporting KC

October 28, 2016 by NWFacts 2 Comments

Nelson Valdez nets the game winner for Sounders FC ( Brandon Farris photography)
Nelson Valdez nets the game winner for Sounders FC ( Brandon Farris photography)

The Seattle Sounders have played Sporting Kansas City three times this season and in all three matches, the Sounders lost their wits about them and frankly have played some horrible soccer.  The Sounders last match with Sporting KC was so bad the team made a coaching change and brought in Uruguayan midfielder  Nicolas Lodeiro  to shore up an offense that was last in the league in scoring.

Both of the changes lifted Seattle into a playoff team that earned the right to host a Western Conference Knockout Playoff game against Sporting KC Thursday at CenturyLink Field. What better way to  gauge how far you have improved  than to play against your nemesis in a winner take all  playoff game.

Thursday night’s game looked to be a replay of the previous two games in which Seattle lost 1-0 at home  to open the 2016 season and the fateful  3-0 loss in Sporting KC, until an unlikely  84-minute goal by Nelson Valdez. The goal was Valdez’s first goal of the season after hitting the cross bar, goal post, side netting , basically everything but the goal in his previous games with Seattle this season.

While Seattle was strutting it’s new and improved look in front of its  36,151 fans, Sporting KC was drinking some haterade and was  not in a complimentary mood. The visitors dominated the first half with 60% possession and  tested Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei with four shots that should have gone in except for the Herculean effort by the Seattle netminder.

“I think we wanted to make sure that we took some of their key players off the ball. Alonso, you can’t leave on the ball. [Nicolás] Lodeiro you can’t leave on the ball very much.

“You have to make sure that goes to other guys because they’re serving and finding other players. A big key for us was just taking them off the ball as much as we could.

I thought our guys had great energy and our combination play up through the middle was very good in the first half. In the second half, we started to open up the game and got a couple chances here and there. But again, we dominated the game,” Sporting KC Coach Peter Vermes said after the game.

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer changed his teams tactic’s in the second half by pressuring Sporting KC and making shorter and quicker passes to offset Sporting KC pressing style.

” They pressed our first pass and that caught us off guard so what we tried  to do in the second half was to try to find some space to make sure we could get the ball past their first line of defense and once we were able to get past their first line of defense, I think the game kind of opened up for us,” Schmetzer said after the game.

While Seattle was able to get more time on the ball, they managed just one shot. It would be the one shot they needed to propel themselves to host Sunday’s Western Conference SemiFinal match against FC Dallas. Schmetzer was pleased to see Valdez  finally rewarded for his hard work.

“I can’t think of a better person to be rewarded for this moment because he has worked so hard all year long , I know there have been people out there that have said things and we get it, we are all pros and we get the business we are in but for him to come  through in such a critical moment is well deserved he carried the team on his back here, and I am so happy for Nelson Valdez”

*Seattle will now face  FC Dallas Sunday (6:30 p.m. PT) at CenturyLink Field.
*This will mark the third straight year the Sounders and FC Dallas will meet in the postseason, with the two teams splitting the results in 2014 and 2015.

*The Sounders topped FCD in two-game series two years ago before Dallas avenged that loss last year via a dramatic penalty kick shootout in Frisco.
*FC Dallas won the season series between the two clubs in 2016 with two wins at home: 2-0 on May 14 and a come-from-behind 2-1 win on Oct. 16.
*The Sounders won the only meeting between the two teams in Seattle on July 13.
*The Sounders lead the all-time regular-season series 10-5-5 and the teams have split the all-time postseason results, 1-1-2.

Coaches Corner. Pete Carroll and Sean Payton on Sundays game

October 27, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Seahawks Tyler Lockett returns a kick

The Seattle  Seahawks ( 4-1-1) will finish their two-game road trip Sunday when they visit the  Mercedes-Benz Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints ( 2-4). Kickoff is scheduled is for 10 a.m. PT). The Seahawks are 8-5 in their last 13 10 a.m. kickoff starts. The Seahawks are coming off an exhausting 6-6 tie with the Arizona Cardinals while the Saints are coming off a 27  to 21 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs  in Arrowhead Stadium.

Sunday game will be the 13th meeting between the Seahawks and Saints in the regular season. Each team has won six games and split the last two meetings. Seattle beat the Saints  34-7 in Seattle ( 2013) and lost the last time they were in New Orleans 34-19 in 2010.
Here is what Seattle Head Coach  Pete Carroll and New Orleans Head coach Sean Payton had to say about  Sunday’s  game.

 Saint Head Coach Sean Payton
(On what it will take to match up with the Seattle defense)
“They do a great job of keeping the ball in front of them, number one, and number two, they play with great technique. There’s a lot of talented players. There’s a culture defensively that’s grown with confidence and they’ve done a great job. You see them contest receivers, you see them adjust their defense versus some odd ball sets. The game this past Sunday, when you watched it was actually, although it wasn’t high scoring, it was enjoyable to watch because you recognize the battle of field position and the kicking game and then Seattle comes up with a blocked punt that puts them in position to tie the game. Those guys play outstanding defense now for a number of years. It’s been a while but 2013 we played them twice. Monday night and then in the playoffs and they’re always a tough opponent. Extremely difficult to prepare for.”
On Max Unger and how he’s contributed to the Saints offense)
“He’s a good leader. He’s done a good job. I would say he’s played very well. He’s been healthy and he gives you that athleticism at center that helps you in so many ways. He’s smart, he and Drew [Brees] clearly are involved quite a bit in protections. He’s done a great job.”

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll talks to the media. ( Brandon Ferris)

( Brandon Ferris)

Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll
(On Drew Brees)
“
He is one of the great players to play in this game. I don’t think of guys in that way until they’ve played a really long time. He has sustained the great level of production for, I don’t know how many years he has been there, but for the last eight to ten years, he has been on top with huge numbers and huge consistency and the kind of special performances and ability to pull off finishes and the great red zone numbers, the great third down numbers, year after year after year. Forget about what the makeup of the player is, that means nothing to me, it’s just the kind of stuff that happens when he’s on the football field, is really the great players who have played the game. His numbers bear that out. He still looks great. He has a 68 and a half completion rate now, almost eight yards a play and stuff. He’s just doing great stuff. This is a really big time challenge for anybody who plays these guys. He’s putting the number up every week, it’s the second ranked offense and all the rest. He doesn’t look any different than he has in a long time. He doesn’t look like there’s any diminishing qualities to his play. He’s always been a great touch guy and a great precision, accuracy guy. A great rhythm guy, too. Getting the ball out. They’ve only been sacked nine times. He’s a phenomenal talent. It’s a great challenge for us.”
(On the way the Saints spread the ball around)
“They know, Sean [Payton] knows what he’s doing. He uses his players. He uses formations, he uses tendencies and situations and all of that. This is the big time throwing game you can see in the NFL, and this is as high powered as you get. We have great respect and we’ve seen it over the years, we know, and here is its again, they’re still on it. They plugged other guys in and they’ve been able to maintain a really high level of production too with other guys, which is really impressive.”

VOTE SHELLY SPEIR FOR JUDGE

October 27, 2016 by NWFacts 1 Comment

Speir 5 x 8__ad-2

After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Utah with a degree in ballet, Shelly was unexpectedly called upon to support her family in Alaska at age 21. She worked as a dance instructor at the Alaska Dance Theater and earned a Master’s Degree in Teaching. From there, Shelly began teaching middle school students in a community with many disadvantaged families. But a career in the law held Shelly’s interest, and she moved to Washington to earn her law degree at Seattle University.

For the past 18 years, Shelly Speir has been a courtroom litigator with the respected Tacoma law firm, Troup, Christnacht, Ladenburg, McKasy, Durkin & Speir. She became the first and only female partner at the firm where her practice focuses primarily on representation of those who have been injured by the negligence of others. Shelly does battle with opponents like insurance companies, large corporations, and governments every day. Her clients trust her to do what’s right and fair.

Shelly Speir has honed her skills as an advocate in the courtrooms of Pierce County. She has been named a Super Lawyer by publisher Thomson Reuters, and Seattle Met Magazine called her one of the “Top Attorneys in Washington.”

Although Shelly has experience in real estate, probate, land use, and environmental law, her greatest success as a trial lawyer has been in representation of the injured. Some of her significant courtroom victories include:

A $2.2 million verdict against three dog owners and Pierce County for a pit bull attack
Two settlements in excess of $600,000 in cases of premises liability
A $250,000 settlement for a tenant who sustained a brain injury after slipping and falling on a stairway in a rental unit
A settlement of almost $600,000 for a developmentally delayed person who suffered seizures after a rear-end collision
Successful advocates often make the best judges. They know all sides of the argument and simply try to follow the law and the facts and do what’s right and fair.

Shelly Speir has become a leader with the Washington State Association for Justice, serving on its Board of Governors and as a frequent and respected speaker at legal education programs.

For the past decade, Shelly has given back to the Pierce County community through her fundraising efforts for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.

Sounders FC vs Sporting KC Preview

October 27, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

It is only fitting that the Seattle Sounders (14-14-6 48 points) opponent in Thursday night’s Western Conference Knockout round match at CenturyLink Field ( 7:00 p.m PT) will be Sporting Kansas City (13-13-8, 47 points). Why you ask?  Sporting KC  swept the two-game season series between the two teams. KC beat the Sounders 1-0  March 6th in Seattle to open the MLS season. The two teams played a second time in KC on July 24th  and just like the first meeting Seattle was on the short end once again. The second defeat ( 3-0 ) was  Seattle’s low point of the  season. The Sounders managed just one shot which came in the 87th minute and was five yards wide of the goal. The defeat left Seattle ninth in the ten team Western Conference.

SOUNDER MAKE CHANGES
The Sounders organization replace head coach Sigi Schmid with interim coach Brian Schmetzer two days later and brought in Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro  on July 27th  resulting in  the team  winning  eight of its last 12 games despite the loss of Clint Dempsey due to a medical condition related to an irregular heartbeat. The Sounders turnaround can be attributed to Schmetzer switching the team’s formation from a 4-4-2 to a  4-2-3-1, which took advantage of  Lodeiro’s creative  play in the middle of the pitch (eight assists and four goals in 13 games ), the return of Panamanian Center Back Roman Torres from a knee injury  and sensational forward play by rookie Jordan Morris. Morris leads the team with 12 goals.

SPORTING KC  DOMINANCE
KC is unbeaten in five games against the Sounders dating back to 2015. Sporting KC is 2-15-5 all-time in road game since 2011. Sporting KC lost to the Portland Timbers last year in the longest penalty-kick shootout in MLS history.

MATCHUPS
Sporting KC marksman Dominic Dwyer scored 16 goals this season, placing him fifth on the MLS  list for most goals scored. The versatile Dwyer is a classic forward in that he can score with both feet, can run on to the ball or dribble the ball towards opposing defenders and take advantage of his speed and quickness once inside the box. Seattle Center backs Roman Torress and Chad Marshall will need to make sure Dwyer is marked when he makes his runs into the Seattle goal area.

KC midfielder Beny Feilhaber recorded  13 assists in the regulars to tie him for third most in MLS and is a versatile playmaker who can create chances for himself and teammates if given time and space with the ball in the middle of the field. Seattle midfielders  Osvaldo Alonso and Cristian Roldan will try to jam the middle of the field and deny Feilhaber time and space while creating room for creative Nicola Lodeiro to distribute the ball to Jordan Morris who will try to run behind the Sporting KC backline. KC will bring a physical style intended to intimidate and slow down the Seattle attack.
