Seattle Seahawks Michael Bennett inks contract extension

December 31, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

For Seattle Seahawks defensive linemen  Michael Bennett the old adage of patience comes to those who wait was reaffirmed Friday afternoon as the team announced Bennett signed a three-year contract extension worth $31.5 million.

The deal will keep Bennett in Seattle until the 2020 season and puts him among the top ten highest paid Defensive linemen in the NFL. Since signing with Seattle in 2014, Bennett has always said he would like to retire in Seattle. Here is what the talented and outspoken player had to say regarding his contract extension.

(On finally getting a contract extension) “It’s pretty cool. It’s good to be a part of an organization that recognizes players’ talent. Being able to be compensated for what you do on the field is always a good thing.”

(On why right now) “I don’t know. It’s up to John [Schneider] and Paul Allen, he’s a great owner. He wanted to give me an extension, they all wanted to get me one. So it was pretty cool to have somebody want to give you something.”

(On was it difficult) “It’s always difficult when you want to get more money. You know how it is and when you finally get it you feel happy, you feel like you deserved it and earned it so it’s one of those things.”

(On does he have a sense of relief) “Not really. You always want to get more money but football is never stress free because you got so many things that weigh in on you. Whether it’s the injuries, whether it’s the game. You have a little less stress but still a little stress there.’

(On does it ever get personal with Pete Carroll) “Pete is Pete. He’s one of those guys who has the players’ back at the end of the day but he still has a job where he has to have the back of the organization. I think he does a great job with a lot of the decisions he makes.”

(On was he ever anxious during his rehab) “No, during that time I think it was mostly just rehabbing and getting focused on getting back and coming back healthy. I wanted to come back and be the same player and I was lucky enough to have that happen.”

(On why he loves Seattle so much) “I love Seattle, I love the city, I love the fans here, I love the culture, I love the Seahawks, I want to retire a Seahawk. My teammates are great teammates. It’s just a great place to be.”

(On retiring here) “That’s pretty cool, to have it somewhere, where you put a lot of hard work in and you’ve done a lot of great things for the organization. To actually get a chance to retire in that same place is always special.”

(On how he’s going to celebrate) “I don’t know; this is my fourth contract it’s all the same.”

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll talks blown opportunity

December 27, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Last Saturday 34 to 31 loss to the Arizona Cardinals a CenturyLink Field was without a doubt one of the most perplexing losses of the year for head coach Pete Carroll and his Seattle Seahawks.

Sure there was the midweek incident regarding Richard Shermans press conference in which the All-Pro Cornerback had words with a local media member instead of apologizing for his outburst during the Seahawks 24 to 3 win over the Los Angeles Rams the week before. While the best-laid plans can go array sometimes, who would have guessed the midweek transgressions were just the beginning of what was a major stumble from grace for proud organizations.

BLINDSIDE SATURDAY
When the Seahawks faced off against the 5-8-1 Arizona Cardinals, the game was supposed to be payback for the  6-6 tie game the two teams played at Arizona in week seven, Saturdays contest also represented an opportunity for the Seahawks to finish the season undefeated at home for just the fourth time in franchise history  and clinch the NFC’s number two seed. The game was being played on Christmass Eve and the Seahawks walking wounded were at full health. All roads pointed to an early Christmass present for the 12’s.

When the dust settled in the Seahawks 34 to 31 loss, the undefeated home streak was snapped, the NFC’s number two seed in the playoffs was now out of reach, the teams promising receiver Tyler Lockett left the game with a season-ending leg injury. Other injury bug casualties included Thomas Rawls who left the game with a shoulder injury, while he finished the game, safety Kam Chancellor missed part of the first half with an ankle injury.

CARROLL ON MOVING ON
Seahawks Pete Carroll spoke to the media on Monday regarding his team’s disappointing loss to the Cardinals.

(Opening) “It’s quite obvious we missed a big opportunity in the ball game this weekend. We’re really disappointed in that. It’s clear that we didn’t play well enough coming out of the chutes. We came out kind of like we did the week before and we struggled offensively, then in the second half we took off and did all kinds of stuff and scored a bunch of points and put up yards and got back on track.

That’s something we’re trying to square away so that we can play good solid ball games here. This one coming up is hugely important for us to find some rhythm that goes from start to finish and play complementary football like we have for a good part of the year.

We needed the defense to help us out in the second half, they played a good first half with saving one play then the last few times they had the ball, they moved it down the field and got the points they needed. I thought Carson [Palmer] again did a really good job to manufacture a win for them and we’re really disappointed in that. The kicking game kind of got us. The Cardinals have been really effective versus us when we’re kicking the football and they did it. Hauschka had a tough time, something the numbers kind of show over time.

We’ve got to do better against these guys. We missed that opportunity to take advantage of a special teams situation that we maybe could have. We really just didn’t do what we wanted to do but I’m really fired up about some stuff and fired up about us getting better and knowing that the third down numbers went in the right direction again on offense. It’s really important for us, the ability to come back and get back in the game is really important for us. We just didn’t close it out like we wanted. Very difficult to take.”

(On if he has talked with Tyler Lockett) “Yeah, he’s making it through it. He’s feeling better today than he did after the surgery and all of that. He’s getting better. He’s going to stay in the hospital for another day or so because it’s easier for him. We’ll see how that goes, it’s kind of day to day.

He’s comfortable being there right now under the circumstances. The surgery went exceptionally well and he has a real chance to get back going and moving in four to six weeks from now, then from there he’ll work his way back in a few months and have a chance to get himself going. He’s absolutely, positively optimistic about all of that.

All he can do is ask about everybody else, he wants to know how everybody else is doing and he was fired up that the receivers all made touchdowns and he couldn’t help but talk about anything other than himself. Classic Lockett fashion. He’s being a real stud about it.”

(On does he see anything alarming because of the inconsistency) “No I don’t think it’s alarming; I just think it’s what we’re working with. Obviously it’s going to be really difficult to expect us to play a great game until we do. You want to see that I know that’s what you’re waiting for.

We’re counting on our guys to be able to play off one another and play off the defense and how they’re playing and special teams and put together good games. We got one big game coming up and we’ll know where we are after this week and nobody knows right now we’ll see what happens. We got to win our game and take care of business and we’ll see where that leaves us and then away we go. Then it’s the new season and we’ll see how that goes.”

The Seattle Sounders FC soccer club continued their offseason rebuild Friday morning by acquiring striker  Will Bruin, 27, from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for targeted and general allocation money. On Thursday the Sounders added midfielder Harry Schipp from the Montreal Impact in exchange for general allocation money.

“Will is a known commodity as a consistent goalscorer that we believe can immediately bolster our attack,” said Sounders General Manager and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Coupled with yesterday’s acquisition of Harry Shipp, we’re excited about the impact that these two young and proven players can bring next season. I see Shipp filling in Ivanschitz’s role, Bruin filling in for Valdez. Evans can cover for Mears if he doesn’t come back.”

According to Lagerwey the team has had conversations with Erik Friberg and Tyrone Mears regarding their return to the team next year.

Welcome to Seattle, @wbruin! We’re looking forward to seeing more of this in 2017. pic.twitter.com/KgDmbs6Uqt

The addition of the  6-foot-2, 195-pound Bruin will enable Sounders head coach to place  MLS Rookie of the year  Jordan Morris on the wing where he can use his speed and skill to run at defenders. Bruin a proven goal scorer in MLS  has spent his entire six-year career in Houston, amassing 50 goals and 20 assists in 178 regular-season games and another six goals in 13 postseason matches. He tallied four times and added three assists in 18 starts in 2016.

The message sent from the Seattle Sounders FC acquisition of Montreal Impact midfielder  Harry Shipp  Thursday night is that the team aims to keep its word of pursuing a second MLS Cup and adding a second star to the team logo. During the team’s victory rally at the Seattle Center last week,  the team added one star to the team logo after winning the 2016  MLS Cup Owner Adrian  Hanauer was quoted as saying we need to have more than just one star.

The Sounders are a little thin in the midfield at the moment  after declining contract 2017 renewals on Erik Friberg and Andreas Ivanschitz. Shipp is a strong and study attacking center midfielder who can also attack from the wings.”We’re very excited to add a talented young player like Harry to our roster,” said Sounders general manager & president of soccer Garth Lagerwey in a team statement. “He’s a proven contributor in this league and someone who we think will be a great addition to the locker room as we build off of an MLS Cup-winning season.”

“We’re very excited to add a talented young player like Harry to our roster,” said Sounders general manager & president of soccer Garth Lagerwey in a team statement. “He’s a proven contributor in this league and someone who we think will be a great addition to the locker room as we build off of an MLS Cup-winning season.”

Shipp, 25, has played three seasons in MLS to date, making 93 MLS regular season appearances, first with hometown club Chicago Fire from 2014-15, and then this past season with the Impact. In all, he’s scored 12 goals and added 17 assists in league play.

ROAD WARRIORS
Major League Soccer on Wednesday announced that the Sounders will open next season against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, March 4 at 5:30 pm. PT. Broadcast information will be released on a later date.

The Sounders will also play on the road in Week 2 against the Montreal Impact on March 11 at 4 p.m. PT before hosting their home opener at CenturyLink Field against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, March 19. Kick off for the home opener is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.

The Sounders will play their first two games on the road next year due to scheduled infrastructure improvements to CenturyLink Field. MLS is expected to announce the full schedule for all 22 teams in January.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll on football and life.

December 22, 2016 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Pete Carroll looks on from the sidelines. ( Brandon Farris Photography)

The Seattle Seahawks have had one of their most eventful weeks in a very long time. Unfortunately for the NFC Division Conference Champions, the off-field news overshadowed the on-field news. The onfield news was the announcement of defensive ends, Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, cornerback Richard Sherman and linebacker Bobby Wagner, being named to the 2017  Pro Bowl. Feel good stuff and plenty of high fives to go around.

Then the weekly press conference that turned into the proverbial stare down that turned into somewhat interpreted as a major news story.  During his weekly press conference, Ricahrd Sherman was  asked several times , about his behavior during last Thursday Nights Seahawks win 24 to 3 over  St. Louis  Rams,  Sherman blew a gasket and threatened a local media member with ruininghis  journalist career by having his credential pulled.

As one can expect in this day and age, the incident went viral and became a National news story. No judgment here just some context to move us to the next football related news. That being Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll spoke to the media on Thursday and gave his thoughts on the team’s upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals and yes the Richard Sherman incident.

(Opening) “During the Christmas holidays, we had really fun playing football this week. We had a really good week of preparation, guys busted butts to make sure that we practiced really well every day. Their last shot of coming home to CenturyLink, we want to try to really play a good football game and I think it’s a terrific matchup with the Cardinals. We see these guys as we always see them, explosive, tough, aggressive. A big challenge with their defensive scheme and the players that they have. We’re ready to go for it. Good week and it’s not Christmas yet. Christmas will come after the football game, we’ll try to make it a joyful holiday for all those who care, I know that’s a bunch of 12s. We’ll see what we can do for it.”

(On Richard Sherman’s Tuesday press conference) “I was a little surprised. I just think that, like he said, you guys got after him pretty good and it got to him a little bit. He didn’t really get everything out that he maybe wanted to get out, in the way he wanted to. We’ve been together throughout the week to make sure that everything is in the right place for us. We’re fine here and I was really proud of Jim Moore for the way he expressed it and put it out there.  I think these are learning experiences, these are opportunities. We don’t do things right all the time, we make mistakes and we go too far and we have to correct, and that’s what we do around here.”

(On potentially winning every home game this season) “It’s important. In championship years, you really need to play great at home and we try to dominate at home. Our guys know that and it’s something very important to us. It’s very important to us, I’d like to get that done so we know next time we come back it’s playoff time and we will have something intact that we’ll be very proud of and something to play off and play for. It’s a small thing but it’s obviously significant. We set up our whole season to win our division and own that thing so we can be here when it comes to playoff time. We’re not done. We have one more shot and we’re going to try to max it out this weekend.”

Full Casting Announced For The Pajama Game

21380_show_portrait_largeFull Casting Announced For The Pajama Game
Bill Berry directs a sexy new production of the
Tony Award®-winning musical

February 10-March 5, 2017

Music & Lyrics by Richard Adler & Jerry Ross;
Book by George Abbott & Richard Bissell;
Based on the novel
7 ½ Cents by Richard Bissell
Direction by Bill Berry; Choreography by Bob Richard
Music Direction by Joel Fram

This winter, The 5th Avenue Theatre will have Seattle adjusting its radiators with a steaming hot new production of the Richard Adler and Jerry Ross musical theater hit, The Pajama Game. With direction by 5th Avenue Theatre Producing Artistic Director Bill Berry, this sultry stunner features Bob Fosse-inspired choreography byBob Richard and music direction by Joel Fram. Billie Wildrick leads the cast as Katherine “Babe” Williams, the feisty union firebrand opposite Josh Davis as the handsome new superintendant, Sid Sorokin. They are joined by Greg McCormick Allen, Kyle Robert Carter, Taryn Darr, Sarah Rose Davis, Allen Galli, David Pichette, Shaunyce Omar and others.

The Pajama Game runs February 10-March 5, 2017 (press night Thursday, February 16, 2017) at The 5th Avenue Theatre(1308 5th Avenue, Seattle). For single tickets (starting at $29) and information, please visit www.5thavenue.org, call the Box Office at (206) 625-1900 or visit the Box Office at 1308 5th Avenue in downtown Seattle.

“The Pajama Game is a musical with a shockingly modern and contemporary sensibility,” Berry said. “You have two passionate and spirited lovers that are equally matched and a group of workers fighting for a living wage. When Babe is faced with the hard choice between love and compromising her principles, she doesn’t hesitate to make the hard choice. It would seem love, sex and politics are as hot as ever.”

Things are getting steamy at the Sleep-Tite Pajama factory where handsome new superintendent Sid Sorokin is falling hard for Babe Williams, the feisty firebrand heading the union grievance committee. But sparks really fly when the workers go on strike for a 7½-cent pay raise, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well. The show that defined Fosse style with seductive dance numbers such as “Steam Heat” and “Hernando’s Hideaway,” this critically acclaimed musical won three Tony Awards® including Best Choreography and Best Musical. December 19, 2016 by Dennis Beaver Leave a Comment

The Low Income Housing Institute celebrated the grand opening of Abbey Lincoln Court, 68 new homes for families and individuals in Seattle’s Central Area. The apartments serve those making up to 60% of the area median income ($53,760 for a family of four).

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray spoke at the event citing his appreciation that LIHI is both helping to retain racial and income diversity in the Central Area and honoring the rich jazz history of the Jackson Street corridor, which the City recently renamed Ernestine Anderson Way. LIHI’s Ernestine Anderson Place, named in honor of the legendary local jazz singer, stands right next door to Abbey Lincoln Court.
Abbey Lincoln Court celebrates Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010), American jazz vocalist, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist. A dramatic performer whose interpretations were full of truth and insight, Lincoln notably worked with Benny Carter and Max Roach (who she married). In 1960, she recorded Roach’s civil rights jazz masterpiece, “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite.” She appeared on a number of TV shows, including Mission: Impossible and All in the Family, and in several films, including For Love of Ivy with Sidney Poitier and Beau Bridges, and Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues.

Other speakers included Abbey Lincoln’s nephew Darryl Wooldridge, who flew in from Long Beach and shared recollections of his aunt, including memories of her civil rights work, which brought Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee to their living room.
