The Seattle Seahawks have had one of their most eventful weeks in a very long time. Unfortunately for the NFC Division Conference Champions, the off-field news overshadowed the on-field news. The onfield news was the announcement of defensive ends, Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, cornerback Richard Sherman and linebacker Bobby Wagner, being named to the 2017 Pro Bowl. Feel good stuff and plenty of high fives to go around.
Then the weekly press conference that turned into the proverbial stare down that turned into somewhat interpreted as a major news story. During his weekly press conference, Ricahrd Sherman was asked several times , about his behavior during last Thursday Nights Seahawks win 24 to 3 over St. Louis Rams, Sherman blew a gasket and threatened a local media member with ruininghis journalist career by having his credential pulled.
As one can expect in this day and age, the incident went viral and became a National news story. No judgment here just some context to move us to the next football related news. That being Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll spoke to the media on Thursday and gave his thoughts on the team’s upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals and yes the Richard Sherman incident.
(Opening) “During the Christmas holidays, we had really fun playing football this week. We had a really good week of preparation, guys busted butts to make sure that we practiced really well every day. Their last shot of coming home to CenturyLink, we want to try to really play a good football game and I think it’s a terrific matchup with the Cardinals. We see these guys as we always see them, explosive, tough, aggressive. A big challenge with their defensive scheme and the players that they have. We’re ready to go for it. Good week and it’s not Christmas yet. Christmas will come after the football game, we’ll try to make it a joyful holiday for all those who care, I know that’s a bunch of 12s. We’ll see what we can do for it.”
(On Richard Sherman’s Tuesday press conference) “I was a little surprised. I just think that, like he said, you guys got after him pretty good and it got to him a little bit. He didn’t really get everything out that he maybe wanted to get out, in the way he wanted to. We’ve been together throughout the week to make sure that everything is in the right place for us. We’re fine here and I was really proud of Jim Moore for the way he expressed it and put it out there. I think these are learning experiences, these are opportunities. We don’t do things right all the time, we make mistakes and we go too far and we have to correct, and that’s what we do around here.”
(On potentially winning every home game this season) “It’s important. In championship years, you really need to play great at home and we try to dominate at home. Our guys know that and it’s something very important to us. It’s very important to us, I’d like to get that done so we know next time we come back it’s playoff time and we will have something intact that we’ll be very proud of and something to play off and play for. It’s a small thing but it’s obviously significant. We set up our whole season to win our division and own that thing so we can be here when it comes to playoff time. We’re not done. We have one more shot and we’re going to try to max it out this weekend.”
