The University of Washington Huskies used a ball-hawking dense and a punishing ground game to dominate the Colorado Buffaloes 45-10 in the Pac-12 Championship game.
If the key to life is about controllable’s then the 4th ranked University of Washington Huskies ( 12-1 ) have mastered the hurdles in their path to a College Football Playoff Committee invitation. Exhibit A to the committee was the Huskies dominating 45 to 10 win over the 8th ranked Colorado Buffaloes ( 10-3,) in the Pac-12 Championship game Friday night at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara.
Buffalo quarterback Sefo Liufau was knocked out of the game when he twisted his right ankle while being sacked on the Buffaloes’ first drive. While Liufau returned in the third quarter, the Buffaloes’ never recovered from the debilitating blow. Backup quarterback
Steven Montez looked like he might be able to lead the Buffaloes to victory when he answered the Huskies first quarter touchdown with an 8 play 55-yard drive that ended with a Philli Lindsay three yard line that tied the game at seven’s with 3:07 left in the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Buffaloes, it was the first and last time they would see the end zone for the rest of the game.
Colorado’s touchdown must have hurt the Husky defenses feeling because the Dawgs defense forced two consecutive interceptions from starting quarterback Liufau who had returned to start the third quarter. The first interception by Liufau to start the third quarter was a pick six by Taylor Rapp the games MVP. Rapp made it two picks for the game when he picked off Liufau on the Buffaloes’ next offensive possession.
WASHINGTON OFFENSE DOES ENOUGH
With quarterback Jake Browning having a decent, but not great game, the Washington offense went to its rushing game and grinded out an impressive win. Browning did manage two touchdown passes one to Darrell Daniels in the first quarter and the second was to John Ross in the third quarter. Browning was 9/14 for 118 yards. Running backs Myles Gaskin ( 29-162) and Lavon Coleman ( 18-107) both rushed for over 10o yards.
“Yeah, we hurt. We lost. ” Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre said after the game.”We lost to a good team and made some mistakes that kind of gave them a chance to pull away from us. Our goal every year is to make it to the Rose Bowl, I have a picture of the bowl hanging in my office, I look at it everyday”
Jake Browning tied Marcus Mariota (2014) for second place on the Pac-12’s single-season list for touchdown passes with 42. He needs one more to tie Jared Goff (2015) for the record.
John Ross III has 17 touchdown receptions this season, one shy of Mario Bailey (1991) for the Pac-12 record.
