While its not exactly the return of Prodigal son, the return of forward Clint Dempsey to the Seattle Sounders practice pitch at StarFire Sports on Wednesday morning was a welcome site for teammates, fans and the Sounders FC organization. Dempsey was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after the Sounders 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers on August 21st. Dempsey scored two goals in the Cascadia Derby match and has not practiced or played since.
While Dempsey is limited to light practice duty and has not been cleared to participate in games, the company line is that the team is cautiously optimistic the mercurial forward will return to full participation before the season ends.
The Sounders (9-5-13 , 32pts) have seven matches left and need to string together some victories if they are to make the playoffs. The Rave Green are six points behind the Portland Timbers who occupy the sixth and final playoff position.
The Sounders will host the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday afternoon. The Whitecaps (9-7-13, 34pts) are two points ahead of the Sounders and can keep their dim playoff chances with a win over the Sounders.
