DaVita Kidney Care Center Offers Employees New Way to Minimize Environmental Impact
One issue plaguing recycling efforts is the fact that only certain waste is accepted for recycling while the rest has to be thrown away. DaVita Kidney Care Center, a Tacoma-based treatment center, is offering its employees a way to recycle their traditionally non-recyclable waste easily and sustainably with TerraCycle’s Kitchen Separation Zero Waste Boxes. According to senior management, DaVita Kidney Care had been on a mission to reform their recycling program, going through multiple efforts to make less of an environmental impact by implementing new programs through their internal Green Team. They found the Kitchen Separation Boxes while looking for ways to recycle more items that are used frequently in the building, such as coffee and tea accessories, dining disposables, cleaning supplies and plastic packaging.
“I had the ambition to recycle more items that can’t be recycled through our city recycling program; as an office building of almost 600 teammates, we create quite a footprint,” said Nicole Cullens, purchasing coordinator at DaVita Kidney Care. “The Kitchen Separation box is consistent with our ‘One For All’ mentality. It gives our teammates the chance to be responsible and aware of their effect on the planet.”
By placing TerraCycle’s Kitchen Separation Zero Waste Boxes on every floor next to the recycling, compost and other waste bins, DaVita Kidney Care provides employees access to a recycling solution for a variety of waste streams in one spot, diverting these items from landfills. Once filled, the boxes are sent to TerraCycle for processing where the components are separated and recycled for use in new products.
This use of TerraCycle Zero Waste boxes represents a new step in the company’s continued efforts to reduce waste. According to Cullens, DaVita’s Green Team has worked to decrease the company’s environmental impact by replacing disposable paper and plastic tableware with reusable dishes. The company is also piloting a program through the City of Tacoma to recycle paper towels, which otherwise get thrown away. Working together with companies such as DaVita Kidney Care, TerraCycle aims to help create a waste-free world. “We keep each other accountable for recycling as much as we possibly can,” says Cullens. “Thanks to the help TerraCycle – we have significantly cut down on waste in our Downtown Tacoma building and look forward to sustaining this effort.” TerraCycle offers varying levels of Zero Waste Boxes catered to fit the exact needs of each individual, family or organization.
