18,000 elementary students a year.

lets go_0With the help of donors like you, we’re shaping road ready kids—kids that are happy, healthy, safe and respectful riders. With donations like yours we aim to raise $10,000 by the end of the year, which will allow us to receive a matching gift in memory of longtime elementary school teacher Nancy Burrill, for a total of $20,000.

Tacoma Boxing Club

September 1, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

8825789_1471982027.8059

For more than 40 years the Tacoma Boxing Club and its volunteer coaches have successfully provided a positive program to support the city’s youth. Our club has produced over 50 amateur National Champions, 8 amateur World Champions, 5 Olympians, and numerous professional boxers. Our boxers learn to be disciplined, self-confident, and develop leadership skills that can last a lifetime.

The Tacoma Boxing Club is open to males and females from 8-34 years of age. All skill levels are welcome.

We are settled into our new gym. Tacoma Boxing Club is now asking the community to help raise $15,000 for an HVAC system to heat up our 1,500 square ft gym. We currently have no heating system and this winter was extremely hard on our boxers. We are trying to avoid going through another winter without a heating system. Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Your financial support of ANY amount will make a difference! You never need to worry about your donation supporting anyone’s  salary because we are a 100% volunteer program.

You can help by sharing this link :www.nwfacts.com/sports/little-league/tacoma boxing club

Seahawks, Safeway Host Central Area Youth Association to Training Camp

Day 7 of training camp at Renton’s Virginia Mason Athletic Center carried a little bit different feel than the other six workouts open to fans so far this summer, as 12s were treated to a scrimmage between Seattle’s offense and defense.

Thirty minutes into practice, DJ Supa Sam queued up The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony — the same track that plays during Seahawks introductions on gamedays at CenturyLink Field — to welcome a group of kids from Seattle’s Central Area Youth Association (CAYA) to the middle of the field for a ceremonial coin toss with head coach Pete Carroll.

Courtesy of Safeway, the Seahawks’ title partner of training camp and the 12 Tour, CAYA was hosted on site to enjoy a unique VIP experience that included a gift bag for each child, a Seahawks jersey of their favorite player, and a post-practice meet-and-greet with Seahawks defensive ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, as well as tight end Jimmy Graham.

1cst_am4i0034“It just kind of helps them feel good about themselves, coming out here,” said CAYA executive director Joe Staton, a CAYA alumnus and former professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers. “They’re getting a chance to meet some of their idols, they’ve got the names of their idols on the backs of their shirts — they’ll have these forever — and they got a chance to go out on the field.

“This was a real big deal for these kids. Not very many kids in the whole state get a chance like this, get to go out on the field and talk to the players, so they’ll remember this forever.”

CAYA’s mission is to help facilitate the positive development of youth, and that’s one of the primary reasons why Safeway found it appropriate to bring an aspiring group of young football players from Seattle’s central district out to meet those who play the sport professionally.

“CAYA really tries to teach them that they need to consistently be dedicated to hard work, keep up their grades, and that this is a rare profession and it takes a lot of dedication,” said Sara Osborne, Safeway’s director of public affairs and philanthropy. “So I think them seeing this, most of them have never been to a game, have never been to a practice, so the idea of a player is very elusive and not reality. I think Joe is really trying to use this to say if you follow these same steps you could potentially get there one day.”

1cst_am4i0047On top of Staton, one individual with CAYA ties to make it pro is Jason Terry, the Franklin High School standout who has enjoyed a lengthy career in the NBA. Terry, whose nephew was part of the youth group in attendance Monday, took note of CAYA’s visit to team headquarters on Twitter, replying “C.a.y.a. Where it all started #206” to a Seahawks tweet.

Yet the reality is not all kids will be able to achieve at the highest levels of sport, so Staton hopes visits like Monday’s will help instill the type of values youth can also apply in the classroom, in the community, and in the home.

“You know what’s exciting about this is they get a chance to see that they’re a person just like them. They have to grow up to get to this point,” Staton said. “We have kids that are eight, nine years old who are playing football. They don’t know what it takes to get to this level and talking to some of these guys this afternoon, they’ll be able to explain how difficult this is and how much it takes, and how much you have to think and have good grades in school and all that just to get to this point. It’s not just being a big kid and coming out here and playing football. There’s a lot more to it than that and I’m sure that they’ll say some things to the kids this afternoon that’ll be inspiring and will help them move forward.”

CD Panthers headed for Naples, Florida to play in National Championship Tournament.

July 6, 2017 by Michael Bible 1 Comment

CD Panthers earn a birth to National Tournament. Input provided by Michael Bible Jr.

teamtrophycelebration

CD Panthers celebrate their glorious victory.

The U9 Central District Panthers are headed to Naples, Florida to participate in the National Championship Tournament. The CD Panthers won the Greater Seattle Youth League by going undefeated in the regular season then suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to Parkland in the NW Facts Championship game.

Despite the loss the CD Panthers qualified for the U9 Championship bracket, while Parkland qualified for the U10 bracket.  Both teams will represent the West Coast in the 8 team 2017 FBU National Tournament to be held in Naples, Florida December 17th thru December 21st. The Panthers earned the National Tournament bid over teams from Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Washington.

According to FBU Washington Director Robert Mason both teams deserved a bid to play for the National Title,  “Watching the CD Panthers in both the regular season and winning their league championship was a pleasure. They are put together that Championship game vs Parkland Raiders last year in the NW Facts Championships, That game could have gone either way and CD is rightfully deserving of the bid as well” said Mason.

Trophy

“This is a huge deal, these kids will remember this opportunity to put the CD Panthers on the map”, Panthers head coach  Shawn Thomas said of his teams birth to the National  Tournament.

“I believe the CD Panthers can compete and have the potential to beat any team in the country. They have a great organization top to bottom. Their selection is a validation that PNW has some of the most competitive youth football in the country.” Said Eric Medeiros Director of Player Development for the Pacific Northwest and West Coast.

The FBU administration used the NW Facts Rankings and NW Facts Western Washington Championships in research to find another representative to play for their national championship.

NW Facts “Western Washington Championships” is recognized as a major postseason tournament. The NW Facts tournament will be played the weekend of November 18th and 19th. A league championship will most likely get an invitation to battle against the state’s best teams to fight for the rights to be #1 in Washington State.
