The only sure thing regarding Seattle Sounders FC striker Obafemi Martins is that no one is really sure what is going on. Yea the proverbial be ready for the unexpected clique. While some one knows what is going, trying to find that some one is one deep rabbit’s hole and not for the faint of heart.
The only true fact is that the Nigerian striker is not practicing with the club as they finish their preseason work outs and prepare for their February 23 home match against Club America in the first leg of the 2015-2016 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal Round.
The is he going , or is he staying drama grew legs when ESPNFC first broke the news Friday night that Martins was being courted by multiple teams from the CSL. The BBC reported early Sunday that the deal to send Martins to Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua had been finalized.
And right on cue, MLS and Sounders FC had a no comment regarding Martins contract situation with the team or league. Sounders FC Manager GM and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey did confirm through Sounders FC.com on Sunday night that Martins was not with the team.
“Oba’s not here with us in this phase of camp,” Lagerwey said. “We’ve had an approach from a Chinese club for his services, and it could take a while to have that resolved. Hopefully we’ll know more by the end of the week.”
In just under three years of service to the Rave Green, Martins has been a dynamic front line double threat that has produced 43 goals and 23 assist in 83 appearances across all competitions. Martins was instrumental in helping the Sounders win their first Supporters’ Shield in 2014 and that year’s US Open Cup title. Martins lost the MVP race that season to the LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane.
Current notable foreign players on the Shenhua roster include Senegalise forward Demba Ba, Australian midfielder Tim Cahill and Colombian midfielder and captain Giovanni Moreno. Shenhua is coached by Spanish international Gregorio Manzano .
