In today’s economic climate and highly competitive job market even those with multiple degrees and years of experience are struggling to find work. For those who have faced challenges in life, these circumstances create an even greater barrier to self-sustainability and success. Jason Kinlow, a Tacoma native, Master Barber and 20 year veteran in the Beauty Industry, feels that everyone deserves a chance to be successful.
Starting from humble beginnings, Jason discovered his knack for barbering while cutting his classmates hair during lunch at Lincoln High School. Little did his classmates know, as they sat atop an overturned garbage can while he etched the latest designs into their hair, that one day Jason would use barbering as a vehicle for realizing his dreams. Jason continued to hone his skills, and at the age of 21 took the leap and opened his first barber shop. The business quickly took off and a few years later he had become a trailblazer by being the first African-American owned salon in the Pacific Northwest to be located in a major shopping mall. Neither he nor his peers thought such a feat was possible. That accomplishment was only the beginning.
Today, twenty years later, Jason’s vision has grown and birthed six salon locations across two different states and most recently has led to the opening of a brand new school—the J. Kinlow School of Barbering & Cosmetology (JKSBC). Centrally-located in the heart of Tacoma’s growing downtown business core, JKSBC’s beautiful facility features forty work stations on the clinic floor, a full-service shampoo and dryer area, and a separate classroom area. JKSBC offers a boutique educational experience that offers smaller class sizes, individualized instruction and mentor opportunities. The JKSBC educational approach is designed to holistically develop each student. Through the vast network its founder has developed, the school is able to provide workshops and guest speakers that feature leaders and innovators in Cosmetology & Barbering. The school’s curriculum reflects best practices in theory and praxis and has been designed to meet the State of Washington Department of Licensing standards. Upon completion of the program, students will be fully prepared to pass the state licensing exam.
The Cosmetology and Barbering industry is a field constantly in demand and an excellent gateway to entrepreneurship and financial stability The high price of secondary education can be discouraging and the distance between where students find themselves and where they dream of being can seem insurmountable. Through several funding opportunities available to students, JKSBC is committed to being the bridge that helps create access for students to a better future. “It’s our desire to provide opportunity to as many students as possible.” Jason Kinlow says.
While it has been most well-known as a barbershop, the J. Kinlow brand is now synonymous with excellence and professionalism. Jason’s personal commitment to giving back to the community is as a core value in all of his endeavors. Throughout his life’s journey, Jason’s motivation has remained the same….to use his life as a testament to people that whatever your dream, whatever your passion “It’s Possible.” If you have the desire to change careers or begin to work towards a better future for your life, this opportunity is for you!
