Spaceworks Presents Newest Businesses at Fish Tank Event

November 22, 2017 by NWFacts 1 Comment

Nine new businesses will launch soon in Tacoma thanks to their participation in Spaceworks Incubator program. On Saturday, November 18th, 2017, Spaceworks invites the community to discover the creativity and vision of these entrepreneurs at Fish Tank Entrepreneur Showcase.
This Fish Tank event will be different from the others. Instead of a traditional business pitch panel, the participants will set up interactive exhibits that demonstrate their products and services, and engage visitors to ask questions. They will also present their business model in a fast, 60-second pitch. The showcase participants were accepted into Spaceworks Incubator 2017 fall training cohort and worked with coaches and mentors to refine their ideas. Fish Tank will also be a celebration of their completion of Spaceworks’ 14-week training program, which helps small businesses that have a creative or innovative approach to develop their business plans.

Presenting companies will display a range of creative services from film production, to performing arts, to made-to-measure lingerie. Although some of the participants used the program to develop innovative ideas into business plans, others entered the program with established businesses. “Spaceworks Incubator helped me zero in on what I’m really trying to accomplish with my small business, as well as identify and articulate the value I believe it’ll bring to the community,” said program participant Christina Butcher. “Being able to connect with local experts and business coaches across a wide spectrum of fields has been a huge help.”

The list of newest participants includes Creative Colloquy with Jackie Casella and Christina Butcher, Frankly Cinematics with Jason Farris and Cooper Farris, Healing Renaissance with Paulette Brown and Dominick Weems, Iconic Arts Complex with Tiffany Sanders and Jimmy Shields, Starlight Media with Konika Clemons, Love Letters Intimates with Catrina MacCalla, Pod Works with Kayla Schroader and Diana Murray, The Flavor Theater with Jonte Ausler and NyRee Ausler, Whirr and Thrum with AJ Lindner-Michaelson, as well as entrepreneurs Sarah Woodson and Stephen Gangl, Perry Petaccia and Shannon Shintani.

“Spaceworks has created opportunities for me and helped cultivate my business ideas so I can have a better economic future,” said Konika Clemons, entrepreneur behind Starlight Media. “I have been in Tacoma all my life and have not come across a more passionate, uplifting organization than Spaceworks. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce by making this possible.”

Spaceworks Tacoma invites the public to the free event on Saturday, November 18, at 1120 Pacific Ave (second floor), 1-4pm.

Seattle United for Immigrants and Refugees

November 22, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

City of Seattle Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs Citizenship Workshop. Photo by Alabastro Photography.

As you have probably seen and perhaps unfortunately experienced, the rhetoric regarding immigrants and refugees from “the other Washington” have marginalized our communities and are continuing to create an environment of fear. Many of our friends and neighbors worry about their futures. Here in Seattle, we are saying loud and clear that we continue to stand with our immigrant and refugee communities.

On Inauguration Day, we demonstrated our support by hosting a large event where we provided legal services and information to immigrants uncertain about their future. We served over 1,000 people who needed citizenship assistance and immigration legal advice. Over 750 of you volunteered and made this happen.

And we’re doing it again…because Seattle continues to be united for immigrants and refugees!

On February 3, 2018, we will be assisting more than 1,000 immigrants and refugees with their citizenship applications and providing free legal consultations. Becoming a citizen is the best protection against deportation, and for those who need legal advice, we will have attorneys available to provide consultations.

Stay tuned for more details on how you can become involved.

Last Citizenship Clinic of This Year: Dec. 2, 2017

Our last Citizenship Clinic of 2017 will take place on Saturday, December 2 at 10 AM at the South Park Community Center (8319 8th Ave S 98108). If you or someone you know needs assistance with applying for U.S. citizenship, please inform them of this opportunity to receive free help with filling out their naturalization application.

Honoring Chinese American Women: Cinematic Expressions

November 10, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Join us for a screening of three films celebrating Chinese American women in film, followed by a Q & A with directors Arthur Dong and Robin Lung.

The Curse of Quon Gwon (1916-17) 35 minutes
The earliest example of Asian American filmmaking known to exist today, The Curse of Quon Gwon is also one of the few American silent feature films made by a woman. Written and directed by Marion Wong, it was produced in 1916-17 by the Mandarin Film Company in Oakland, California. The film was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2006.

Sewing Woman (1982) 14 minutes
Sewing Woman chronicles the bittersweet journey of one woman’s determination to survive: from an arranged marriage in old China to working class comforts in modern America. Sewing Woman is based on a series of oral histories and the life story of the filmmaker Arthur Dong’s mother, Zem Ping Dong, an immigrant who has worked in San Francisco garment factories for over 30 years.

Finding Kukan (2016) 75 minutes
Filmmaker Robin Lung turns detective to uncover the forgotten story of Li Ling-Ai, the un-credited female producer of Kukan (1941), an Academy Award-winning color documentary about World War II China that has been lost for decades.

Following the screenings there will be a question and answer period with directors Robin Lung (Finding Kukan) and Arthur Dong (Sewing Woman).

Arthur Dong is a producer, director, writer, editor, and distributor of documentaries for over 35 years. His films about Chinese America include Sewing Woman, Forbidden City, U.S.A., and Hollywood Chinese. His films on gay issues include Licensed to Kill, Coming Under Fire, and Family Fundamentals. Dong’s latest film, The Killing Fields of Dr. Haing S. Ngor, launched the PBS/World Channel series Doc World in 2016. Among Arthur’s over 100 awards are: an Oscar nomination, 3 Sundance Festival awards, the Peabody, Berlin’s Teddy Award, Taiwan’s Golden Horse Award, 5 Emmy nominations, GLAAD Media Award, the Guggenheim, Organization of Chinese America’s Pioneer Award, OUT Magazine’s OUT 100 Award, and the Alumnus of the Year Award from San Francisco State University. His book, Forbidden City, USA: Chinese American Nightclubs, 1936-1970, won the 2015 American Book Award.

Robin Lung made her directorial debut with Washington Place: Hawaii’s First Home, a 30-minute film about Hawai’i’s historic governor’s mansion and home of Queen Lili’uokalani. She was the associate producer for Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority, Hawaii unit producer for Vivan Las Antipodas!, and unit producer for NOVA’s “Killer Typhoon.” In 2015, she was a documentary fellow at the NALIP ARC diverse female filmmaker residency.

This event is part of the 2017 Pre-Conquest Indigenous Cultures and the Aftermath (PICA) Conference, November 10, 11, & 12.

PICA is a collaborative celebration of the histories of local multiracial and multicultural groups. In 2013, PICA was created as a collaborative effort between a group of students, faculty and community members from the University of Washington’s American Ethnic Studies department, OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, Greater Seattle (formerly Organization of Chinese Americans) and Heritage University of Yakima, Washington. The theme for this year’s conference is “FOR JUSTICE: Reexamining CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT of 1882 and Denials of Other Liberties.”

There is a lot of noise brewing out of Thurston County with blazing fire behind it.

November 8, 2017 by NWFacts Leave a Comment

Xavier Blue – NW FACTS HS Sports

For good reason the Timberline Blazers are off to a hot (10-0) start behind Head Coach Nick Mullen. The Blazers
open their 2017 push for the dome at home vs Stadium High Tigers (4-6). The crowd was loud on both sides of South Sound Stadium. The Blazers even brought out the band to raise the noise meter another notch in their favor.
For many high school football players, the postseason brings with it a serve case of nerves. #44 Mason
Simeta is not one of them. Nothing, including the cold weather was going to keep Simeta from leading his team to victory. Simeta found the end zone on both sides of the ball with runs of 4 and 5 yards, and a 55 interception return for touchdown which would cap Timberlines scoring late in 3 rd quarter.
The Blazers kickoff to Tigers to open the game. It didn’t take the Blazers long to establish momentum early in the game with #15 Colton Steepy picking off the Tigers QB #1 Hunter Wendling just five plays into the game. Steepy return down to the 2-yard line, which would set up a QB sneak by #10 Hunter Campau to put the first points on the board for either team. Tigers would find the end zone early behind RB #3 Nazje Briscoe after great starting field position from midfield with the short kickoff from the Blazers. The tigers would struggle to recover from turnovers and penalties. The game would go into a
running clock with 9:45 left in the 3 rd quarter. Senior QB #1 Hunter Wendling would find the end zone through the air late in the game for 65 and 5-yard passes to end Tigers scoring at 20 points. The Blazers would find the end zone seven more times after and converting on all PATs to remain undefeated, beating Tigers, 56-20!
Next up for the Blazers is Saturday, Nov 11 at 5 PM vs Kamiakin Braves at home.
