The Low Income Housing Institute invites you to attend the grand opening and dedication of Abbey Lincoln Court on Wednesday December 7th, 2016 at 2:30 PM. Self-guided tours of Abbey Lincoln Court – 2020 South Jackson Street in Seattle – will be available starting at 2:30pm. Speaker program starts at 3:00pm and will be held next door at Ernestine Anderson Place – 2010 South Jackson Street.
LIHI is delighted to provide affordable workforce housing in Seattle’s Central Area, close to schools, transit, retail shopping, employment, and cultural opportunities.
Abbey Lincoln Court features 68 units, including studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and 3 bedroom apartments and townhouses in a 6 story building in Seattle’s Central Area. Targeting those making 50%-60% of area median income (up to $53,760 for a family of four), Abbey Lincoln Court is a sister property to LIHI’s adjacent Ernestine Anderson Place, which serves low income seniors.
The project name honors Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010), American jazz vocalist, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist. A dramatic performer whose interpretations were full of truth and insight, Lincoln notably worked with Benny Carter and Max Roach (who she married). In 1960, she recorded Roach’s civil rights jazz masterpiece, “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite.” She appeared on a number of TV shows, including Mission: Impossible and All in the Family, and in several films, including For Love of Ivy with Sidney Poitier and Beau Bridges, and Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues.
When everything is finished in a world, the people go to look for what the artists leave. It’s the only thing that we have really in this world — is an ability to express ourselves and say, “I was here.”
— Abbey Lincoln
