Seattle Reign FC will travel to Norco, California for their first match of the 2017 preseason, when they face the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for the first time in club history.
Kickoff is set for 7:30pm PT at SilverLakes, a new state-of-the-art soccer and event facility. While there will be no live stream of the match, fans can follow live play-by-play at Reign FC’s official Twitter page, @ReignFC.
After three weeks of preseason training camp, this will be the first opportunity for players to experience minutes in a game environment. Seattle Reign FC head coach and general manager Laura Harvey believes this is an important component of preparing for the upcoming season.
“In preseason games you’re trying to put into practice some of the things we’ve been working on in training and see where you’re at,” said Harvey. “Obviously you want to play well as a team and do the things we’ve been working on, but it’s mainly about getting people onto the field and making sure they’re physically in the right place heading into the season.”
Reign FC have often played collegiate teams during the preseason, including the University of Washington every year since 2013. However, this is the first time in club history Seattle will play the 2013 NCAA National Champions.
“We play the local colleges but we wanted to play someone a little further afield,” said Harvey. “It worked out that UCLA was a good fit for this season. With it being an away game I think we can practice some things we want to try to do away from home off the field as well as on it.”
Last season UCLA posted a 15-5-2 record, making the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. This will be the fourth match of the Bruins’ 2017 Spring Schedule, having already played Long Beach State, Santa Clara, and BYU.
“UCLA have a really good alumni group that have gone on and played at the highest level,” said Harvey. “They continue to develop really good players and they have a great program.”
One member of that alumni group is Reign FC defender Lauren Barnes, who played for UCLA from 2007 to 2010. During her career as a Bruin, Barnes notched eight goals and 25 assists. Barnes was a First-Team All-Pac-10 selection her senior season.
Up next, Reign FC will face the University of Washington on April 8th in their final preseason match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm PT at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Seattle will open their 2017 NWSL regular season on Saturday, April 15th at Memorial Stadium when they host Sky Blue FC. Single match tickets are now available. To purchase tickets, visit reignfc.com/tickets or call the Reign FC ticket office at (855) REIGN-FC.
